Chapter VIII
Mr. Warren Baker and Vincent Tyme stood in the surveillance room, watching the monitor as Dr. Harland Wolf sat huddled in a corner of his small room, his head resting on his raised knees, likely getting a brief nap. Harland hadn’t been outside the room in over 12 hours other than once to use the bathroom, and he was growing tired of asking when he could leave. Thanks to Mr. Tyme’s training, software and intuition, Mr. Baker had determined that Harland was still hiding information from the company, and Baker was instructed to keep Harland here until the Investors felt Harland had sufficiently paid for his crimes, or released terms as to how he could pay for them. It had been over 12 hours, much longer than Baker had to hold anyone else for ‘impending financial negotiations’, and even he was beginning to wonder at what the Investors wanted with Harland.
“No, in my opinion he was far too eager to get his hands on those,” Tyme said while staring at the monitor.
Baker blinked. “I’m sorry, I was thinking about something else.”
Tyme looked up at Warren. “Dr. Temple, on the 37th floor,” he said.
“He was eager to get his hands on what?”
“On the specimens,” Tyme said. “Dr. Wolf’s specimens.”
“Oh, right.”
Tyme looked back at the monitor. “I wonder what they do up there.”
Baker simply stared at the monitor as well. His current clearance allowed him to go as high as the 32nd floor, and he had never been higher than the 35th unless specifically requested by the Investors, which was rare. They preferred to do their dealings with Mr. Baker over the Omninet. He had only been in the same room as them once, and that was a disciplinary meeting that resulted in Baker’s demotion. The Investors were not pleased with Warren Baker that day, and the only reason he still retains a higher position in the company was because of the knowledge he had gained was he was the senior operations manager. Now he was a glorified team officer, and his team had come back twice now without results. He feared when the reaction after the Investors read his report.
Just then, there was a knock at the door to the surveillance room. Tyme jumped in reaction to the sound, and then sighed.
“Shit,” he said. “Why doesn’t Sherman send an Omninet alert like everyone else?”
Baker didn’t respond, and just moved to the door, opening it and letting Agent Sherman in.
“Agent,” Baker said. “You look even worse than before.”
It was true. Sherman was moving with a slight limp, and had suffered a minor head wound. He looked more distraught than the last time Mr. Baker had sent him out.
“Do you have what you were sent out for?” Baker asked.
“No,” Sherman responded. “We’ve lost Abrams.”
Tyme spun around in his chair, eyes wide. Baker inhaled sharply and clenched his jaw, glaring at Sherman. “Agent, that’s two of your men now.”
“I know,” Sherman responded.
“How did it happen?”
“The dinosaur got him,” Sherman said. “Spread him across the garage.
